  • Mountain Farming - Experiences in a Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

The mountainous region in Rio de Janeiro state is the main agricultural pole of the state in the production of vegetables, flowers and poultry. The region is responsible for over 90% of the leaf sold in the unit of Ceasa-RJ in Rio. In 2011, the landslide tragedy killed more than 900 people in the region and many farms were destroyed. The fertile soil disappeared under tons of mud, and in certain cases, the most superficial layer was removed leaving many farmers without the option to plant again. Embrapa, through the Center for Research and Farmers Training in Nova Friburgo, has been working with research, courses, training and dissemination of sustainable practices appropriate for that reality. This video was produced in 2015 by Embrapa Agrobiology and shows some of these practices.

Fairtrade offers the opportunity to both fresh fruit plantations and small farmers to get a price which aims to cover their average costs of sustainable production. Additionally, producers can invest the Fairtrade Premium to improve their businesses and social and environmental conditions. For example, many producers have chosen to use Fairtrade Premium funds to convert their production to organic. Millions of people around the world -- many of them small-scale farmers in developing countries --depend on the production, processing and sale of fresh produce for their livelihoods, income and food security. Expanding production of fresh fruit offers opportunities to create employment, to raise households' incomes and generate foreign exchange earnings through exports.

Pull out from organic products on display to wide of fair STORYLINE: The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is playing host this week to the BioFach organic food fair, a Latin American version of the event that normally takes place every year in Nuremberg, Germany. Brazil is South America's leading consumer and producer of organic products, with sales growing at about 30 percent per year, according to the fair's organisers. Organic food first started appearing on supermarket shelves in Brazil in 1997. Since then, the sale, consumption and production of organic products has taken off - encompassing now not just vegetables and fruits, but also products like wine, coffee and soy. In Rio de Janeiro's largest supermarket, the amount of organic products on sale has doubled since 1997, increasing 40 percent faster than non-organic products in the past year. For Maria Jose Felipe, a housewife, organic products are not just a healthier option - she says they taste better. The BioFach fair is meant to discuss ways of expanding the production and consumption of organic products in Latin America. Other South American countries are getting into the organic market as well, for example, with organic bananas coming from Bolivia and organic wine from Argentina. Organic food production in Brazil grew by 30 percent last year, accounting for 30 million US dollars in exports and 200 million US dollars in domestic sales. Brazil is also the biggest supplier of organic products to the European market. BioFach organisers say the global consumption of organic products is also growing at about 30 percent per year. Total global sales are about 25 billion US dollars per year. BioFach continues until Friday. LEADIN: Small, family-run farms are still the majority in Brazil, but the way of life is dying as the next generation of farmers seeks alternative sources of work. Now several groups are working with farmers to breed new life into the traditional way of farming. STORYLINE: These bananas are on sale in the market in Rio de Janeiro. Most of the fruit and vegetables consumed in the city pass through CEASA (Centrais de Abastecimento de Campinas SA) - a suppliers market established in 1974. This is where intermediaries buy agricultural products from farmers to supply supermarkets and neighbourhood markets. The suppliers themselves, although registered as farmers are often truck owning intermediaries who buy from families that work in fields hundreds of kilometres away. Family agriculture accounts for 84 percent of all farms in Brazil. Only sixteen percent are non-family owned according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics Leandro Mesquita is a family farmer. He runs three banana plantations in the forests of Vargem Grande in Rio de Janeiro. Once a week he uses a team of mules to carry the harvested bananas to a van back to his house in the Pedra Branca forest. Once there, members of his family help place the bananas in a deposit where they will ripen ready to sell at market. He sells some of the bananas directly to the public - which gets him a higher profit. At the farm Pedro and his extended family help with the planting of vegetables for their own consumption and for sale in the local markets. Tropical weeds grow fast and weeding is arduous work that needs a collective effort. His wife, nephews and in-laws take turns helping, but the next generation may swap weeding for the lucrative lure of city life. "Nowadays young people don't want to work in the fields, because they believe life in the city is easier and better, but I think differently, that there is a better and healthier life quality here," says fourteen year old Leandro Mesquita, Pedro's nephew. Pedro's sons are not here today, they are out doing odd jobs in the city, a growing trend among family farmers. "A mason's helper makes eighty or ninety 'reals' a day (USD $30-34). Up here we harvest bananas; take them to the market and pay the cost of the mules and such, so they can't get as much and that is why family agriculture is becoming extinct," says Pedro Mesquita. In Mag, sixty kilometres (37 miles) North of Rio, a group of family farmers have established a new kind of street market. Every Saturday the farmers sell their products directly to the consumers. No intermediaries are present here. The fair started in 2012 under the coordination of the ASPTA Ngo (Assessoria e Servios a Projectos em Agricultura Alternativa), which promotes family and organic agriculture. "A fair like this where only farmers sell allows the farmer to have direct contact with the consumer who can appreciate the product of that farmer. The price paid is much more just," says Renata Souto, an agronomist for ASPTA who helps organise the fair. Souto comes here periodically to research farmer's needs and try to provide solutions that can help increase their income. Many here sell jams, crystallised fruit and other manufactured products such as the popular tapioca snacks. Still, here too, the younger generation is largely absent. "It's a big problem. Young people generally don't want to stay with the parents in family farming. I have three children. All three when they became eighteen or nineteen, one went to college, the others joined the army," says farmer Ney Moura. "Our products have no poison. They are more healthy. They get a better price, are more profitable," says organic farmer, Delurdes Santana. Suelen Carvalho lives in one such settlement. Ginger is a herbaceous perennial with underground rhizomes having serial leafy shoots of 0.5 to 0.75m height; leaves sheathy, alternately arranged, linear with 15 cm long and sessile flowers borne on a spike, condensed, oblong and cylindrical with numerous scar bracts; flowers numerous yellow in colour with dark purplish spots, bisexual, epigynous, stamens only one, ovary inferior, three carpelled; fruit an oblong capsule, seeds glabrous and fairly large. Climate and Soil Ginger grows best in warm and humid climate. It is mainly cultivated in the tropics from sea level to an altitude of 1500m, both under rainfed and irrigated conditions. For successful cultivation of the crop, a moderate rainfall at the sowing time till the rhizomes sprout, fairly heavy and well-distributed showers during the growing period, and dry weather with a temperature of 280 to 350C for about a month before harvesting are necessary. Prevalence of high humidity throughout the crop period is desirable. Ginger thrives best in well-drained soils like sandy or clay loam, red loam or lateritic loam. A friable loam, rich in humus are ideal. However, being an exhaustive crop, soil should be rich in fertility. Varieties Several cultivars of ginger are grown in the different ginger growing areas in India. They are generally named after the localities or places where they are grown. Some of the more prominent indigenous types are Maran (Assam), Kuruppampadi, Ernad and Wynad local (all from Kerala). A high yielding introduction Rio-de-Janeiro has become very popular among the growers. Its yield potential is 25 to 35 tonnes per ha. The fiber content is 5.19 % and dry ginger recovery is 16-18 %. Recently, High Altitude Research Station, Pottangi (Orissa) has released three improved varieties.

In our farm, three hours driving from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we have a project of organic tomatoes in a greenhouse and also Vetiver plants. Vetiver (http://www.vetiver.com.br) is an amazing plant from India that can be applied in many different things such as slope stabilization against mudslide, water purification, essence oil and parfums production, handcraft, etc . Both projects, Organic Tomatoes and Vetiver are social and scientific here. That means, we try to improve them, get knowledge and help other people. Whenever we get positive results we try to spread them to the communities around that practice traditional agriculture and suffer a lot with this. To help on those projects we accept friendly people from all over the world that can come and stay in the farm for free. We provide simple and basic food and lodge. People can also have their own vegetable garden. In exchange these young people help working in the farm projects. The nature here is amazing. We have a lot of land, forests, mineral water sources, a big lake, ducks, chickens, cows, gooses and many birds around. Local people living here are great. They are very wise and will teach you many things about life, portuguese language and Nature. Take a look in these videos and enjoy people talking about their experience here, nature and landscape. Kam Chuan has been running his own farm in the Cameron Highlands of Malaysia for more than a year. He shows us some of his different fruit and vegetables - tapioca (also known as yucca or manioc), a staple food, one that is very common in Southeast Asia - and love fruit (or tree tomato), a rarity found only at their arboreal source and not at any market.
