  • Mountain Farming - Experiences in a Mountain Region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

The mountainous region in Rio de Janeiro state is the main agricultural pole of the state in the production of vegetables, flowers and poultry. The region is responsible for over 90% of the leaf sold in the unit of Ceasa-RJ in Rio. In 2011, the landslide tragedy killed more than 900 people in the region and many farms were destroyed. The fertile soil disappeared under tons of mud, and in certain cases, the most superficial layer was removed leaving many farmers without the option to plant again. Embrapa, through the Center for Research and Farmers Training in Nova Friburgo, has been working with research, courses, training and dissemination of sustainable practices appropriate for that reality. This video was produced in 2015 by Embrapa Agrobiology and shows some of these practices.

  • Despite economic crisis, there's a positive forecast for Brazil's organic farms

Organic food is proving it can make a difference in Brazil's economy. The country's been struggling to spur growth in most industries, except for the organic farming industry. CCTV America's Paulo Cabral reports from Brazil. As the economic crisis deepens in Brazil, a number of retail businesses counted their losses. But some were counting their blessings. According to a Brazilian government survey, sales of organic products grew by 35 percent last year. And the forecast for this year is for another 30 percent growth. In organic farming, workers have to manually remove the weeds that grow around the green cabbage. In conventional farming, chemicals would be used to get rid of them. Organic farmers said this kind of intensive labor is what makes their product more expensive. Despite t...

The area in Argentina is bigger because they have all this pasture, but we have more plantations here of organic products." 18. Pull out from organic products on display to wide of fair STORYLINE: The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is playing host this week to the BioFach organic food fair, a Latin American version of the event that normally takes place every year in Nuremberg, Germany. Brazil is South America's leading consumer and producer of organic products, with sales growing at about 30 percent per year, according to the fair's organisers. Organic food first started appearing on supermarket shelves in Brazil in 1997. Since then, the sale, consumption and production of organic products has taken off - encompassing now not just vegetables and fruits, but also products like wine, coffee and soy. In Rio de Janeiro's largest supermarket, the amount of organic products on sale has doubled since 1997, increasing 40 percent faster than non-organic products in the past year. For Maria Jose Felipe, a housewife, organic products are not just a healthier option - she says they taste better. The BioFach fair is meant to discuss ways of expanding the production and consumption of organic products in Latin America. Other South American countries are getting into the organic market as well, for example, with organic bananas coming from Bolivia and organic wine from Argentina. Organic food production in Brazil grew by 30 percent last year, accounting for 30 million US dollars in exports and 200 million US dollars in domestic sales. Brazil is also the biggest supplier of organic products to the European market. BioFach organisers say the global consumption of organic products is also growing at about 30 percent per year. Total global sales are about 25 billion US dollars per year. BioFach continues until Friday. Silva sells his produce at a farmer's market in Sao Paulo and delivers baskets of organic products to customers' houses. It's a market driven by a growing interest in sustainability and healthy eating, particularly among the middle and upper classes. Producers said the price difference between organic and conventional food has reduced over the past few years, but it's still expensive. So at least for now the organic market is expanding, but for those who can afford it.

In our farm, three hours driving from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, we have a project of organic tomatoes in a greenhouse and also Vetiver plants. Vetiver is an amazing plant from India that can be applied in many different things such as slope stabilization against mudslide, water purification, essence oil and parfums prodution, handcraft, etc . Both projects, Organic Tomatoes and Vetiver are social and scientific here. That means, we try to improve them, get knowledge and help other people. Whennever we get positive results we try to spread them to the communities around that practice traditional agriculture and suffer a lot with this. To help on those projects we accept friendly people from all over the world that can come and stay in the farm for free. We provide simple and basic food and lodge. People can also have their own vegetable garden. In exchange people help working. The nature here is amazing. We have a lot of land, forests, mineral water sources, a big lake, ducks, chickens, cows, gooses and many birds around. Local people living here are great. They are very wise and will teach you many things about life, portuguese language and Nature. Take a look in the videos and enjoy the people talking about their experience here and landscape. Get inspired and come to visit us!! Here watch Rory taking a Vetiver plant off and talking about his experience in the farm. Get inspired and come to visit us!!
