• Business blooms for plant and flower growers

In the Guaratiba region of Rio de Janeiro, a growing number of farmers are reaping the benefits from Brazil's economic boom. Nearly three hundred farms, large and small, are providing exotic plants. At Horto das Palmeiras, Rio's main palm tree producer, sales are steadily growing. The farm employs 80 people and is responsible for many of the palm trees in Rio's avenues. Growers in this district are said to have been inspired by late landscape artist Roberto Burle Marx, who created one of Brazil's largest plant collections in Guaratiba - boasting around 3,500 species. Marx, who died in 1994, brought plants from the remotest corners of the Brazilian wilderness and adapted them for cultivation. Biologist Marlon Souza explains how his legacy has encouraged many local people to start...

Biologist Marlon Souza explains how his legacy has encouraged many local people to start growing exotic garden plants. "They were gardeners, like in my family. My uncle worked here as a gardener and when he left, he turned his vegetable farm into a garden plant nursery. So those families currently produce garden plants in their properties and are economically important for the Guaratiba region," he says, as he holds a rare Heliconia from the Amazon named after Burle Marx. The exotic plant business is being boosted by upcoming international sporting events like the World Cup and 2016 Olympics, flower arrangements and exotic plants are in demand by new hotels, buildings and shops. New residential apartments, hotels and shopping malls are currently being built, most of them in the Barra da Tijuca district. Guaratiba just a few kilometres away was traditionally a banana producing area, but now flowers are becoming the new staple crop. Nicodemus Neto finds flowers easier to grow and manage. "You can produce with less difficulty, and it's easier because clients come to your door, you don't have to go to the street fair to sell your produce," he says. Hotels and convention centres are the largest consumers of tropical flowers. Many of the flowers can be found naturally in Rio's many remaining forests. Tropical flower arrangements have become popular in Brazil, as the country seeks to promote its own identity. "Yes, they are in demand because they are typically Brazilian plants. Those who visit our country want to see plants from our land, food from our land, so they request very colourful things that are lasting and remind them of Brazil, remind of carnival, colours, everything," says Manuela Cordeiro, who provides flower arrangements for hotels in Barra da Tijuca. Guandu Tropical is one of Rio's largest providers of tropical flowers. Having grown roses in the past, they now grow thirty species of tropical flowers. "As time went by, people compared and discovered that a tropical flower arrangement can last eight, 10, 15 days. Roses do not even last one day. You place it in the morning and the next day it has to be discarded" says Jose Luiz Abreu, one of the brothers who own the farm. Abreu works here with his extended family, his son Cezar, his two brothers and three nephews plus ten hired workers. Most of the Heliconias grown here are Brazilian in origin. From Malaysia, came the Alpinia Purpuratas pink and red ginger flowers and the torch gingers, popular with flower arrangement professionals. The garden and flower industry employs 18 thousand people in Rio de Janeiro state alone, Brazil's second producer after Sao Paulo state. The ornamental plant segment has increased its yearly growth from eight percent in 2006 to 15 percent a year in 2012, according to Ibraflor - Brazilian Floriculture Institute. A government programme promotes the plant and flower business through loans and technical courses. Growers are hoping the good economic times will continue, helping to further fertilise their growing industry. http://buyorganiccoffee.org/1186/brazil-drought-drives-arabica-prices-higher/ Brazil Drought Drives Arabica Prices Higher By www.BuyOrganicCoffee.org The worst drought in Sao Paulo state in Brazil in 84 years could leave the 9 million person city of Sao Paulo without city water within 100 days according to a report on the Weather Channel. Brazil's largest city could run dry in less than 100 days if the city's government doesn't act, Brazil's Public Ministry said. São Paulo, a city of more than 9 million people, is facing one of its worst water shortages in years, brought on by the worst drought to hit São Paulo state in 84 years, the Associated Press reports. But the drought and its effects are not limited to the cities. Brazil produces a third of the coffee in the world and forty-four percent of the Arabica coffee. A Brazil drought drives Arabica prices higher. Arabic coffee futures are up on expectations of a smaller harvest in Brazil according to the Wall Street Journal. Coffee futures prices surged more than 4% to the highest level in four months on Tuesday, as dry weather in Brazil raised worries that the world's biggest grower would reduce the next harvest. Arabica-coffee prices have gained 89% this year as Brazil's worst drought in decades hurt the development of coffee cherries, prompting growers, exporters and other industry members to slash their estimates for the current crop. USDA Report The USDA Coffee Update from June 2014 forecasted a rise in coffee prices due to the drought in Brazil. World coffee production for 2014/15 is forecast to decline 1.5 million bags from the previous year to 148.7 million due primarily to a weather related shortfall in Brazil. However, the reduction is expected to be partially offset by rebounding production in Colombia and Central America. Global bean exports and consumption are forecast at record levels, drawing inventories down . The good news for lovers of Colombian organic coffee brands is that Colombian production is likely to be up. The bad news is that coffee leaf rust, la roya, has ravaged crops in Central American nations like Nicaragua. The other bad news is that your cup of organic coffee is likely to be more expensive in the coming year. A large part of this is the fact that growers in Central America are spraying heavily to protect their plants against the leaf rust. This will remove substantial quantities of beans from the organic category. When Will Retail Prices Rise? There are already price increases by Starbucks and Folgers but these folks buy early and have prices set by contract in advance. However, as the supply of good quality Arabica coffee dwindles, prices are likely to go a lot higher in the next year. Although Colombian production is likely to be back up by 2 million bags to around 12 million bags, Brazil will likely see its production fall by 5 million bags to around 33 million. (These are 60 kg = 132 pound bags of coffee beans.) As Brazil drought drives Arabica prices higher it will likely drive the price of organic Arabica beans much higher. Maybe it is time to buy green organic Arabica beans from Colombia and stock up! http://youtu.be/kwF1FwTswv8

Uravidam Programme tips Rajan KV Sooraj Puthiyedam Ginger farming techniques part 1 - malayalam - protray ginger - low budget house farming inger, an indigenous plant, is an important spice crop of the world. It is valued in medicine as a carminative and stimulant of the gastro-intestinal tract. Dry ginger is used for the manufacture of oil, oleoresin, essence, soft drink, non-alcoholic beverages and vitaminesed effervescent soft drinks. India is the largest producer and exporter to more than 50 countries accounting for more than 70% of world production. The botanical name of ginger is Zingiber officinale L. which belongs to the family Zingiberaceae. Ginger is a herbaceous perennial with underground rhizomes having serial leafy shoots of 0.5 to 0.75m height; leaves sheathy, alternately arranged, linear with 15 cm long and sessile flowers borne on a spike, condensed, oblong and cylindrical with numerous scar bracts; flowers numerous yellow in colour with dark purplish spots, bisexual, epigynous, stamens only one, ovary inferior, three carpelled; fruit an oblong capsule, seeds glabrous and fairly large. Climate and Soil Ginger grows best in warm and humid climate. It is mainly cultivated in the tropics from sea level to an altitude of 1500m, both under rainfed and irrigated conditions. For successful cultivation of the crop, a moderate rainfall at the sowing time till the rhizomes sprout, fairly heavy and well-distributed showers during the growing period, and dry weather with a temperature of 280 to 350C for about a month before harvesting are necessary. Prevalence of high humidity throughout the crop period is desirable. Ginger thrives best in well-drained soils like sandy or clay loam, red loam or lateritic loam. A friable loam, rich in humus are ideal. However, being an exhaustive crop, soil should be rich in fertility. Varieties Several cultivars of ginger are grown in the different ginger growing areas in India. They are generally named after the localities or places where they are grown. Some of the more prominent indigenous types are Maran (Assam), Kuruppampadi, Ernad and Wynad local (all from Kerala). A high yielding introduction Rio-de-Janeiro has become very popular among the growers. Its yield potential is 25 to 35 tonnes per ha. The fiber content is 5.19 % and dry ginger recovery is 16-18 %. Recently, High Altitude Research Station, Pottangi (Orissa) has released three improved varieties.

Derlon is a Brazilian street artist, originally from Recife, now living in São Paulo. In March, Derlon was in residence in a Nordeste Brazilian community, immersed in the life of organic cotton producers, with whom Veja is working with. During one week, Derlon by the means of monumental wall paintings, depicted the life of these growers who decided 10 years ago to give up pesticides and to focus on agroecology. Today, they are an example to follow at global scale, who are succeeding in struggling against poverty and developing real innovations. Through his art, Derlon stands as the spokesmen of agroecology which is an innovative social and agricultural practice. Film directed and edited by Gonçalo Galvino Shot by Ricardo Beltrami

Dr. P. Stephen Baenziger The second Heuermann Lecture featured Dr. P. Stephen Baenziger, the first UNL scientist to hold the Nebraska Wheat Growers Presidential Chair, an endowed professorship through a licensing agreement between NUtech Ventures and Bayer CropScience. Baenziger, who honors the work of scientists who've gone before him and describes himself as the current steward of the university's wheat-breeding program, has been working to help Nebraska growers improve their crops and help feed the world since he joined the university in 1986. He will discuss the importance of agriculture in our future.

Tet, Sev, MLate, 28”, 7”, 16 buds, P/P fertile. Brazil is known for its flamboyance, so it is only natural that I would name this riot of color BRAZILIAN FLAMINGO! Big, 7” flowers (that measure almost 9” if held out), this tet can be seen from as far away as Rio De Janeiro, or so it seems! Tropical orange blend with a red eye and yellow/green throat, this is one you will want to party with!
